Since Freud’s psychoanalysis was significantly informed by Greek tragedy (terms such as Oedipus complex and catharsis being at the core of Freudian theory), to use drama to test the validity of psychoanalytical approach seems practicable. This course is designed for those students who are interested in applying psycocriticism to literary works. As such, it will introduce some of the major theories of psychoanalysis so as to familiarize students with the theoretical principles and basic concepts of this particular discipline, and then it will move on to assess the instrumentality of psychoanalytical criticism by means of a Shakespeare play-- King Lear and a film of our choice. Class discussions, however, will naturally include other literary works.
